Google Maps- Zoom Position

I have a bunch of listings showing all of the listings. My map shows a very zoomed out view of my google map. I would like the view to be within 20 miles of the users current geographical position. However, when I select the list option I lose my ability to tell the map what level the initial zoom should be.

Does that make sense?

Can you share a link to the application so we can see what is happening, or can you take some screen shots for starters?
