If you want to customize images, I recommend moving away from the slidebarmenu and create a custom slider menu using a group focus.

With the slidebarmenu, you’re really limited in terms of what you can do design-wise. But if you draw a group focus (that’s made visible by clicking something else), it’s a group that you can customize as you’d like.

Circular pictures are pretty easy to create when using normal image elements. Here’s a quick lesson on the concept.
